  • CAHS Newsletter #15: A High-Flyin' Happy New Year!

    e Newsletter

    1

    Dear CAHS Member,

Happy New Year and welcome to 2012! I hope very much that the new year brings you overwhelming happiness, good fortune, and good health.

2012 will bring about some (positive) changes to the CAHS, one being this e-publication! I was taken by surprise when upon the announcement of my appointment as newsletter editor the congratulatory e-mails began to flow in. I was struck by all the warm greetings: “WELCOME ABOARD, CAITLIN!” they exclaimed, “Best wishes for success with CAHS!!” they cried. I sincerely appreciate all of the kind words and I know that this newsletter will be a great way to meet many of the individuals who contribute to this generous and enthusiastic organization.

If you’re like me, after the presents have been opened and all the guests have gone home you start to feel a bit of the post-holiday blues. For many it’s either back to the old grind or back to school, while for some it’s the long wait until golf season returns. During the downtime of these winter months take solace in the fact that there are still lots of aviation-related activities to tide you over until the sun (and the chocks!) come out. Until then, if you’re in hibernation mode until Spring mix up some hot cocoa, grab a blanket, take a gander at your latest CAHS Journal, relax, and repeat. If you’ve retreated to warmer climates do the same, but substitute in a fruity drink and a hula skirt.

    Blue skies,

    Caitlin McWilliams

This Month in Canadian Aviation History

The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) begins in Canada

On 17 December 1939 the "Air Training Agreement" was signed and Canada became the primary location for what became the most ambitious, successful, and uniting training scheme ever initiated.

The new year was an exciting time for Canada as news of the massive Empire Air Training Plan swept the nation. Click on the headlines below to read newspaper articles announcing news about the BCATP in January 1940:

  • CAHS Newsletter #16: National Aviation Day, Museums, etc!

    e Newsletter

    1
    Dear CAHS Member,

Recently my independant research has revolved around romance, relationships, and nostalgia during wartime - themes somewhat fitting for this time of year. I have been studying panels of Canadian nose art and it is evident love (and sometimes infatuation) was a common ailment affecting the artists. Whomever the inspiration – whether it be a sweetheart at home or a girl overseas - these feelings often manifest as sultry pin-ups on the fuselage. This week I will be giving a talk in Guelph on RCAF nose art and I invite you all to come by for a very photo-heavy presentation!

The sweetest thing I came across this Valentine's Day wasn't expensive or edible, but rather quite the contrary. When browsing the internet for newsletter material I came across the "Valentines for Veterans" program which encourages schools, organizations, and individuals (especially children) to create a hand-made valentine for a Veteran. The cards are then distributed to Veterans in long-term care facilities across the country in time for February 14th. The program is sponsored by Veterans Affairs Canada to "show Veterans your gratitude for their sacrifices and achievements in serving our country... [and] bring joy to a Veteran this Valentine's Day."

I know everyone has different ideas about Valentine's Day, but I think this one trumps all notions of chocolates and flowers.

If you're still aching for more heartstring-tugging romance, here's a link to a serendipitous love story about two Second World War pilots, Herbert Carter and Mildred Hemmons - a Tuskegee airman and the first African American woman in Alabama to earn pilot's wings.

The First Flight of the Silver Dart

23 February, 1909 marked the flight of the first powered, heavier-than-air machine in Canada.

Canadian John Mccurdy flew the "Silver Dart" - an aircraft made of steel, bamboo, wire, wood, and silk - off the ice of Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia. The aircraft was also the first in Canada to carry passengers! The "Silver Dart" continues to be regarded as a feat of engineering and a turning point in Canadian aviation history.

  • CAHS Newsletter #17: Lancasters & Dreamliners & Hornets, Oh My!

    e Newsletter

    1
    Dear CAHS Member,

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet two of the CAHS' favourite people – Scott Blue and Mikey McBryan of Buffalo Airways and Ice Pilots NWT! They were appearing at a convention near Toronto Pearson Airport and I just couldn't miss the chance to meet them so close to home. I brought along copies of "The Ice Pilots: Flying with the Mavericks of the Great White North" by Michael Vlessides (a very good read – highly recommend!) and they were kind enough to sign them in between launching sarcastic (read: hilarious) remarks at each other across the table. Very funny and charismatic, they seemed like very down to earth, regular guys despite their newfound celebrity status. And boy, Scott Blue really is tall. It was an absolute thrill to meet them and I am excited to report that Season 4 of "Ice Pilots" is on its way!

I hope you enjoy your March 2012 e-newsletter. If you are having problems viewing it in your e-mail, visit the online archive at the CAHS website here to view in your browser

I welcome any comments and suggestions on how to improve the publication; similarily, if you have anything you would like to be featured in future issues, send me an e-mail and I will do my best to accomodate!

    Blue skies,
    Caitlin McWilliams

First Use of Lancasters for Bombing, March 1942

The Avro Lancaster first saw active service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 as the new machine of the Allied spring offensive. Its first operational sortie was a mine-laying operation on the night of 3/4 March, 1942. Click the headlines to view newspaper articles reporting on the events:
On the night of 10/11 March, the RAF’s Lancasters conducted their first night-time bombing raids. The target was the city of Essen, Germany, in the central part of the Ruhr area.
As the strategic bombing offensive over Europe gathered momentum, the Lancaster became the main heavy bomber used by the RAF, the RCAF, and other Commonwealth and European squadrons.

CAHS National, the Montreal Chapter, and the Woodhouse family would like to thank all of you who generously donated in memory of Robert "Bob" Woodhouse. Bob, an active member of our organization and an aviation enthusiast, passed away June 11, 2011.

If you believe in the work the CAHS does to preserve and celebrate Canada's aviation history, please consider supporting us as part of your legacy. In the case of the Woodhouse family, we created a donation page on our website in lieu of flowers. You can also learn how to include the CAHS as a beneficiary of your will, leaving us either monetary donations or gifts-in-kind (such as aviation books, photos, memorabilia) by clicking here or contacting us at info@cahs.ca. We would be happy to discuss what you would like your gift to accomplish and answer any questions you might have.

    Membership Renewal Forms for 2012

From the desk of the National Treasurer: "Membership renewal forms for 2012 will be included in the next Journal mailout - the Fall 2011 issue. Because we are behind in Journal production all four 2011 Journal issues did not make it into the hands of the membership before the end of December 2011. Consequently, we delayed the mailing of renewal forms until almost all 2011 issues were produced. Your membership expiry date is included on the envelope in which your last Journal came. Even if your membership expiry date was 31 December 2011, your membership will cover the mailing of the Fall and Winter 2011 issues. Filling out the renewal form and returning with payment will ensure you receive the 2012 Journal issues with no interruption. Cordially Yours, Rachel Lea Heide"

  • CAHS Newsletter #18: Convention Update and a Full Serving of Aviation News!

    e Newsletter

    1

    Dear CAHS Member,

Spring is in the air and with its sunny weather comes the air show season! To keep you informed of what (or who!) is coming to an airport near you, the CAHS newsletter will begin marking the dates of aviation-related events across Canada. This will be a great resource for highlighting the 2012 dates of your reliable local air show, but also for discovering new aircraft, new venues, and new people.

More information on this new section of the newsletter is forthcoming and in the meantime I'll be working to make this an interactive community feature. We'll be debuting an open Flickr group (similar to that of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, seen here) where members can share photos as they attend air shows, expos, Chapter meetings, or the Convention! Flickr also includes a "Discussion" feature where members can connect, debate, and swap stories.

This will be a great forum for you to share your personal aviation-related experiences with other members as you take an active part in celebrating Canada's aviation heritage. Every month you hear about what the CAHS is up to - now we want to hear about what you've got planned!

Will you be attending any air shows / aviation events in May? Let me know at cahs.newsletter@gmail.com!

P.S. As the month of April began, some very creative aviation headlines popped up in the internet.... You really have to think twice about what you're reading on April Fool's Day! (Click on the headline to read more).

This Month in Canadian Aviation History..

100th Anniversary of the Royal Flying Corps

The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was established on 13 April 1912 and operated until 1 April 1918 when Britian’s air operations were amalgamated into the Royal Air Force (RAF). 25,000 Canadians served with the RFC as pilots, observers and mechanics. They earned more than 800 decorations and awards for valour. Three noteworthy Canadians who served with the RFC and received the Victoria Cross were William Avery (Billy) Bishop, William George (Billy) Barker, and Alan Arnett McLeod.

Below are some resources touching on their lives, military career, and accolades.

"For Valour" profile: William Avery Bishop
"For Valour" profile: William George Barker
"For Valour" profile: Alan Arnett McLeod

2012 also marks the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge where Canadians manned aerial reconaissance and fighter aircraft over No-Mans Land. In one example, the soon-to-be-famous Billy Bishop, of RFC Number 60 Squadron, won the Military Cross on April 7 for shooting down a balloon near Vimy.

Source materials come from the superb website "For Valour: Canadian Airmen and the Victoria Cross" and Library and Archives Canada.

    2012 CAHS Convention

An update from the New Brunswick Convention office: Our 2012 Convention will be held at the Delta Brunswick (click to view in Google Maps) in Saint John, New Brunswick from Wednesday, September 5 through Saturday, September 8. The hotel has a block of rooms at the rate of $100/night. When you call (1-888-890-3222) simply mention you are with the CAHS to get the discounted rate.

This year we have an excellent line-up of presentations as well as a potential companion’s program for those spouses who don’t share our same level of passion for aviation history. We will make the registration forms available by the end of April through the next issue of the Journal, Chapter Presidents, and the website. The Maritimes in fall will be exceptional and the convention well worth the trip “out East!”

For more details on the convention including a listing of featured topics, special activities, and location highlights, visit the "Events" page on our website here.

    CAHS Journal

The Fall 2011 issue is at the printers and should be in the mail by the end of April. The Winter Journal is hot on its heels and we expect to be back on schedule this summer through some changes to the editorial team and process. Our current editor, Major Bill March, has been exceedingly busy this last year with his full-time job with the Armed Forces and a deployment to Afghanistan for several months. 2012 is turning out to be just as busy, so Major March will temporarily be turning over the controls to our excellent graphics manager (and publisher of Aviaeology), Terry Higgins.

We also have a set of well-known guest editors to work alongside Terry for the Journal's 50th Anniversary, and an editorial board at the ready. Once again, we thank you for your patience while our volunteers strive to preserve and disseminate Canada's aviation heritage through this important publication.

My grandfather, Robert Dumigan, also enjoyed photography and when the R-100 made its one and only trip to St. Hubert in 1930, my grandfather took a photo of my aunt and father standing in front of the R-100. I’m sure this is where my father caught his love for aviation. This and many more photos are presented in the full story."

The Hawk One Team Debuts First Promotional Photograph

The first promo photo, taken by Katsu Tokunaga, has been released of the 2012 Discovery Air Hawk One.

From the media release by D.V. Dempsey, Team Leader: "You will note that the 100th anniversary logo has been replaced by the tail livery that the RCAF Golden Hawks flew in 1963 and 1964 up until their disbandment. The scheme also features the RCAF serial number 23314 below the Red Ensign. We have now identified 78 former RCAF pilots who flew this aircraft in service between 1954 and 1968, including seven former Golden Hawk pilots. Of interest, we have also identified two legendary friends in the United States who flew the aircraft back in the 1970's for its American owners, Bob Hoover and Steve Hinton."

    Museums and Airshow Updates

    Alberta Aviation Museum

The Alberta Aviation Museum is commemorating the centenary of the Royal Flying Corps with a new exhibit focusing on the experiences of fighter pilots from Canada and the Edmonton area. Read a news article about the new exhibit here.

In addition, the Museum is appealing for donations to send candidates from 12 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets to compete in the annual Schools Aerospace Challenge. The Challenge is designed to encourage young adults to become involved in the exciting high technology world of aerospace. The Museum’s immediate concern is to raise the $45,000.00 budget to send the team to the competition in England over the next 60 - 90 days. All donations to the project should be directed specifically to the Alberta Aviation Museum Schools Aerospace Challenge Program and are eligible for a CRA accepted Charitable Tax receipt. You can read more about the competition and the Museum’s involvement here.

    Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will finally begin restoration work on its RCN Grumman Tracker, thanks to the generous financial backing and enthusiasm of two former Hamilton residents. The Tracker is navy serial number 1577, the 76th one built by de Havilland. It entered service on Dec. 10, 1959. The Tracker will be restored to flying condition in about two years. When it flies, it will carry the paint scheme appropriate for its service aboard HMCS Bonaventure. Click here to read about the history of this aircraft and the motivations of the two generous donors.

    Canadian Heritage Aviation Centre

The Canadian Heritage Aviation Centre is appealing for donations to help fund a move to larger premises. The centre is currently based in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., at the Western tip of the island of Montreal, and suffers from a lack of presence in the tourist industry. At this peripheral location more than 250 volunteers work to raise public awareness of national and local contributions to aviation. The work takes place in one of two workshops at the centre, which is also home to an art gallery, machine shop, library and artifact preservation area. Read more about the challenges facing this organization here and visit their website to donate.

    On the Radar

Canadian Air and Space Museum - Downsview Update

Potentially great developments in the Canadian Air and Space Museum's case against eviction! The Chairman of the Canadian Air & Space Museum in Toronto recently posted a message on the Museum web site on March 30, 2012:

"The Canadian Air & Space Museum is pleased to confirm discussions with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) regarding the potential opening of a revitalized Museum in an outstanding new location which will allow for vastly improved access for residents and visitors to the Greater Toronto Area... No binding commitments have been made at this time. However the Museum Trustees and the GTAA are evaluating opportunities to preserve and present Toronto’s aviation past which includes watershed achievements at both the Malton and Downsview airports."

Fingers crossed! Read the full media release on their website here.

Bomber Command Association Memorial / Bomber Command Museum of Canada

As you may be aware, the Bomber Command Memorial is currently under construction in London. A video producer named Jim Blondeau has produced an excellent video that includes overhead shots of the site under construction, and interviews with those involved in the project. The video (eye-candy for the technically-minded) is available via YouTube here. For more updates and reports on the Memorial, visit their News page.

There is some exciting news regarding Canada's contribution to the Memorial! The Bomber Command Museum is providing several hundred pounds of aluminum recovered from 426 Squadron RCAF Halifax LW682 which will be incorporated into the ceiling of the Memorial.

In addition, Minister of Veterans Affairs Steven Blaney has announced Canada's contribution of $100,000 toward the creation of the Memorial, as well as support for the Bomber Command Veterans travelling to London for the official unveiling of the Memorial in June of this year.

    Researcher-to-Researcher

We receive numerous requests per month from independent researchers and associations looking for help with projects. If you have a research question or are looking for information on a topic, send the details to cahs.newsletter@gmail.com - the CAHS community is a great resource!

Mr. Kelly M. Smith wrote to us looking to find an aviation researcher who could help him put together a nomination for Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame. If you have experience with compiling a nomination, he would appreciate hearing from you at secondmatt@hotmail.com.

The Military Aviation Museum in Virgina is restoring a Mosquito. They are looking to buy or trade for lower cowlings for single stage supercharger engines, as well as bottom cowling sections or two back plates for the spinners. If you could direct them where to find these pieces, please contact the Museum here.

A reqest concerning members of the Air Force Association of Canada. “In his capacity as the Queen’s representative in Canada, the Governor General has invited the Air Force Association of Canada to nominate its most deserving members who are deemed eligible to receive the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal." The criteria and nomination form is available online from the airforce.ca website and here.

We just learned that longtime CAHS member, Doug Hawkes of Calgary, passed away in February at the age of 95. As Bob Winson of the Toronto Chapter reminds us: "Doug's amazing WWII experiences were written up in the Spring 2010 Journal pages 16-29. He was one of the few Bomber Command pilots to write about the fear that bomber pilots felt in carrying out their duties." Read more about Doug's life here.

An American veteran of the air show circut was recently killed in a tragic accident. On 4 April, Howard Pardue and his vintage Grumman F8F Bearcat crashed just after takeoff from his home airport in Breckenridge, Texas. The aircraft burst into flames after impact not far from the departute end of the runway. He was 77. • CAHS Newsletter #19: New Photo-Sharing and Airshow Features!

    e Newsletter

    1
    Dear CAHS Member,

Some exciting new features to help connect CAHS members across the country!
As you will see below under “Airshows and Aviation Events,” the CAHS has begun marking the dates of various aviation-related events across Canada. Hopefully this will inspire you to do some weekend travelling to your local airshow, but also consider visiting some venues you may not have known about before.

We have also debuted an open Flickr group (similar to that of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, seen here) where members can share photos and videos as they attend air shows, expos, Chapter meetings, or the Convention. All you have to do is join Flickr (which is free!), then join the group “Canadian Aviation Historical Society” and you’ll be ready to upload photographs!

The website address is http://www.flickr.com/groups/cahs. To get us started, I’ve uploaded a few of my own photos from last year’s Hamilton Airshow (see, you don’t have to be a professional photographer to submit!)

Flickr also includes a "Discussion" feature where members can connect, debate, and swap stories. This will be a great forum for you to share your personal aviation-related experiences and stories with other members. You can reply to posted discussion topics, or start your own.

Two introductory discussion topics have been posted and await your comments:
    • "How did you become a member of the CAHS?"
    • "Is Canada still an air-minded nation?"
I hope that this will evolve into a great place for members to connect and take an active part in celebrating our aviation heritage in a fun and interactive way!

This Month in Canadian Aviation History..
16 May 1942: Canadian Pacifc Airlines Formed
Canadian Pacific Air Lines was created in May of 1942 with ten bush airlines bought by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. From its inception, Canadian Pacific Air Llines struggled to compete with its rival, Trans Canada Air Lines (later Air Canada).

In 1968 Canadian Pacific Air Lines was renamed as CP Air and boasted a colorful orange, red & silver livery.

In 1987, Canadian Pacific Air Lines was bought by Calgary based Pacific Western Airlines, a merger which formed Canadian Airlines International. In 2001, the financially troubled Canadian Airlines was finally acquired by longtime opponent Air Canada.
For more on the history of this Canadian airline, pick up your Fall 2011 CAHS Journal and read "Canadian Pacific Air Lines: The Four Cultures" where Williams J. Cameron discusses his former employer's corporate history.

    • "The 2011 CAHS Convention" (Richard Goette and Rachel Lea Heide)

Richard Goette also penned the Guest Editorial and raised some questions to the membership:

"Is Canada still an air-minded nation? Is aviation making a "comeback" in the minds of Canadians? How do our reflections on history play a role in rekindling interest in and excitement about aviation?"

  • CAHS Newsletter #20: National Announcements & Summer Chapter Meetings Memo!

    e Newsletter

    1
    Dear CAHS Member,
I hope that you will forgive the minor delay on this month’s newsletter. This weekend my dad and I attended the Hamilton Airshow for Father’s Day (and his birthday) and I thought that this year’s event - which also celebrated the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s 40th anniversary – deserved a special mention in this month’s CAHS newsletter.

My dad and I have spent Father’s Day at CWH since 2006 (which may not sound like very long but hey, I’m 24!). From 2001-2011, the Hamilton Airshow was on hiatus and in its place CWH held “FlyFest” - a weekend of fly-bys and static displays. It was a unique and compelling experience because all of the aircraft – including the Lanc – were accessible to the public. Though a relatively modest event which drew a few thousand people or so, we revelled in its sense of intimacy and spontaneity.

This weekend, however, close to 100 aircraft and crowds in excess of 20,000 helped CWH celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Hamilton Airshow was revived in 2011 and this year’s show was even bigger, louder, and more successful than the last. CWH does not receive any government funding and their airshow has become an important fundraiser for the museum.

My dad and I greatly anticipated the event, yet the show far exceeded both of our expectations. The 6-hour program (see it here) opened with a mass formation tribute to CWH’s collection. Exciting performances from bombers, modern and vintage fighters, parachutists, and stunt aircraft followed and wowed a very enthusiastic crowd. Heart-stopping appearances by the Snowbirds, Matt Younkin, a CF-18 Hornet, and Pete McLeod contrasted well against the majestic and impressive warplanes. The show culminated in a historic and awe-inspiring formation as the CWH’s Lanc and B-25 flew together with B-17 “Chuckie” and B-29 “FIFI” (who reside in the U.S).

The overwhelming success of the Hamilton Airshow reflects positively on the growth of the Museum, the support of the local community, and the future of air displays in Canada (not to mention the desire for genuine, family-friendly entertainment!). Airshows play a key role in preserving Canada’s aviation heritage and educating Canadians about their flying past. They illustrate the growth of aviation and help inspire a greater appreciation for the vital role of aviation in shaping our country. It is an unfortunate reality, though, that many Canadian airshows are being forced to postpone indefinitely, in part because of our current economic climate. For 10 years this was the case with the airshow in Hamilton and it is impossible not to be proud of its newfound success. Congratulations to all involved on another successful year (and thanks for reorganizing the parking situation!).

This Month in Canadian Aviation History..

12 June 1944: P/O Andrew C. Mynarski killed after crew shot down over Cambrai, France

On this day in 1944, Andrew Mynarski died after trying to rescue tail gunner Pat Brophy from their flaming Lancaster bomber. For his heroic efforts, Mynarski was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

27 year-old Pilot Officer Mynarski of 419 “Moose” Squadron was the mid-upper gunner of a Lancaster detailed to a target at Cambrai in France. On this night, the aircraft was attacked and fire broke out. The crew was ordered to bail out, but Mynarski saw Brophy trapped in the rear turret. He crawled through twenty feet of burning hydraulic oil to try and free him but Brophy eventually waved him away. Mynarski retreated and jumped from the plane, hitting the ground hard. French farmers brought him to a German field hospital, but he succumbed to injuries suffered as a result of the fire. Brophy survived the crash.

The Mynarski Memorial Lancaster is housed at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum, and is one of two airworthy Avro Lancaster bombers in existence. In a ceremony on 24 September 1988, the restored bomber (detailed with Mynarski's Lancaster markings) took flight carrying the fire axe Mynarski used in trying to free Pat Brophy.

Bill writes: "1940. Much of the world was at war but the Neutrality Act passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Aug., 1935 was designed to keep the United States out of a possible European war. The law specifically banned shipment of war materiel to belligerents... The Neutrality Act allowed purchase of war material but disallowed their movement out of the United States. Foreign pilots could not come to the United States to “fly away” aircraft while American pilots could not fly the planes to international territory unless…"

  • CAHS Newsletter #21: Early Convention Registration Extended!

    e Newsletter

    1

    Dear CAHS Member,

One of the significant events that has occurred this summer was the unveiling and dedication of the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park, London, United Kingdom. The impressive bronze statue commemorates the loss of 55,573 Bomber Command airmen in the Second World War, and honours those of all nations who lost their lives in the war’s bombing campaigns. Almost 20% of the airmen being honoured by this Memorial were Canadian.

The 30-minute ceremony began as Her Majesty the Queen unveiled the nine-foot high sculpture in front of thousands of people from all over the world. Close to 5,000 were Bomber Command veterans, widows, and family members. The dedication concluded with a flyover by the RAF’s last flying Lancaster which dropped thousands of poppies over Green Park as an act of remembrance. (If you missed the telecast, you can read the Orders of Service by clicking this link).

    • View stunning (stunning!) photos from the Daily Mail here
    • View the official photos of the statue and the unveiling ceremony here

The Memorial comes after five years of campaigning by the Bomber Command Association and for many the acknowledgement is “long overdue”:

The response to the statue itself, however, has been overwhelmingly positive, stirring emotions and memories for many surviving Bomber Command vets:

It is important to note that fourty-two Canadian Bomber Command veterans flew overseas to attend the dedication:

It is also significant that many Canadian institutions donated time, money, and manpower to the creation of the Memorial. One, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, contibuted eight-hundred pounds of aluminum which now forms the ceiling above the sculpture. A team of eleven museum representatives attended the dedication.

    • Read more about the aircraft which provided this aluminum, 426 Squadron Halifax LW682 (OW-M), here
The Telegraph has some great news coverage of this historic event. The following short videos are available online:

Mathias writes: "The Loadmaster was an aircraft whose benefits from its lifting body design could apparently not overcome its most unusual design. It also could not compete with surplus Second World War Dakotas going for $5,000, which Canadair was refurbishing for Trans-Canada Air Lines, Canadian Pacific Airlines and other customers. In addition, newer designs offering greater speed and comfort. The Loadmaster was simply not the right aircraft at the right time."

  • CAHS Newsletter #22: High Flight, First in Flight, & The Flying Water Can!

    e Newsletter

    Dear CAHS Member,
The annual CAHS Convention is only a few weeks away! The New Brunswick Convention Committee has been working hard to organize an exceptional event that will appeal to aviation enthusiasts and scholars of all types. If you would like to share your experience at the convention with the CAHS community, feel free to contact me with your photographs, presentation reviews, and personal highlights from the convention. You can also post to our CAHS Flickr page or Facebook. To all those attending, I wish you safe travels and enjoy the company of old friends and new faces!

    ~*~*~*~

Two weekends ago I attended the Thunder Over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport (Yankee Air Museum) in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in the United States. Torrential rain soaked the field until just before show time when the clouds broke and invited the anxious pilots into the blue sky.

Although we are all very proud Canadians, my friends and I make a point of attending this air show every summer because the folks at Willow Run go to great lengths to bring in unique performers and organize rare appearances. For example, in 2010 they gathered thirteen (thirteen!) B-17 Flying Fortresses* and eight of them actually flew together in an (emotional) formation flyover. This year’s treat were the eight P-51 Mustangs which participated in a mock Second World War ground battle re-enactment before individually passing by the showline. Once again, the show delivered an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience for all attendees. Although there are some fantastic Canadian air shows throughout the summer, I highly recommend the show at Willow Run - especially since it's only about 50km from the border!

This Month in Canadian Aviation History..
“I am enclosing a verse that I wrote the other day. It started at 30,000 feet and was finished soon after I landed. I thought that it might interest you.” – John Magee, Jr. to his parents, 1941

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Writes "High Flight," 18 August 1941

In August of 1941, a young Royal Canadian Air Force pilot began writing the sonnet which, over time, has endured as both a celebrated tribute to fallen generations of aviators and a source of inspiration for pilots (and even astronauts!) today.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. was born in Shanghai, China in 1922, but moved to the U.S. in 1939. One year later he enlisted with the RCAF in Canada, and flew Spitfires overseas until his death in a mid-air collision on 11 December 1941. (For more details on Magee’s life, career, and family, see the Bomber Command Museum of Canada's website here).

Just a few months before his death, Magee became inspired. While flying his seventh flight in a Spitfire he “slipped the surly bonds of Earth” and climbed up to 33,000 feet. It was here, higher than even birds can fly, that he sought to - as the poem says so eloquently - "touch the face of God." He began composing "High Flight" soon after touching down and sent the poem to his father on the back of a letter. From there the poem quickly grew in popularity. Today, the manuscript copy of "High Flight" resides at the Library of Congress.

    - Read the text of "High Flight" here (from vintagewings.ca)

Much can be said about the origin and legacy of "High Flight," one of the most beautiful poems about flying. For a great overview, see Richard P. Bentham’s “High Flight: The Story of John Gillespie Magee” in the Summer 1996 Vol. 34 No. 2 edition of the CAHS Journal. If you do not have a copy handy, read an adaption of the article at yellowwings.ca (or request a back issue here!).

Vintage Wing’s North American Harvard Trainer is dedicated to Magee and is now painted in the markings of Harvard 2866 - known to have been flown by Magee when he trained at RCAF SN 2866 of No. 2 SFTS, Uplands. Read more about the aircraft and its history here. Vintage Wings also acquired some photos of Magee from his family, viewable here.

    CAHS Journal

An update from CAHS Journal Managing Editor Terry Higgins: "Journal 49-4 features six articles on the de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter, and its 'reborn' Viking Air Series 400 Twin Otter, in celebration of the type's 40th year of Canadian military service. The tree CF/RCAF centric articles are balanced with a short piece on the type's origins, another on the floats designed exclusively for this aircraft, and an overview of the Series 400's development. And what's a celebration without colour! Canadian photographers and photo collectors alike have contributed images to grace both the centre-spread and back cover, including a striking panorama of nearly 40 Twin Otters all parked in one spot (taken from another Twin Otter!)."

Work is also well underway on volumes 50-1 & 50-2. A big "thank you" to Terry and his growing editorial board for working hard to get the Journal back on track while maintaining quality publishing.

    CAHS 50th Anniversary Committee

From the CAHS National: "In 2013, the CAHS will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and the CAHS National wants to make sure that this milestone is appropriately marked, both at the convention (which will be in Ottawa, the site of the first convention) and throughout the entire year. In order to accomplish this, the 50th Anniversary Committee needs your help if:
    • You are a CAHS Chapter and will be organizing an event marking the 50th Anniversary, let the Anniversary Committee know so that widespread advertising can take place through the newsletter, website, Facebook, and Twitter
    • You are a long time CAHS Member and have stories and/or pictures from the early years, the Anniversary Committee would love to hear from you
    • You have any ideas of how to commemorate the 50th (events, writings to publish, items to create and sell, etc), please contact the Anniversary Committee
    • You can volunteer to be a committee member and help share the workload"

Mr. Howe was one of the original pioneers of crop spraying in Canada, and was inducted into the Saskatchewan Aviation Hall of Fame in 2005. Mr. Howe recently passed away in March of this year, and the CAHS is honoured to feature his article on our website.
Mr. Howe writes: "Bob Mac Knight flew the pride of our possessions: 'The Flying Water Can.' [...] Our job was only a partial success – we did a 100% job of killing the weeds but some spray drift had eradicated his wife’s flower garden. We camped in his yard for three days. He was finally happy to see the weeds dying and the crop still standing. He said, “To heck with her flowers – they don’t make me any money”. He paid us and we were back in business. We had a successful season and now knew that crop spraying could become an important part of any small aviation business."

    Dear CAHS Member,

This year's convention in Saint John was a remarkable success! Members came from across the country to see the sights, take in some superb presentations, and enjoy some great company. A big 'thank you' to all those involved in organizing and hosting the event, especially our friends from the New Brunswick Convention Committee and members of CAHS National. To all members who attended, thank you for making our 2012 convention such an outstanding success. See you next year in Ottawa!

CAHS President Gary Williams took some time to write up a brief overview of the Convention and its events. Here's a short teaser, but be sure to read his full comments here (especially if you were unable to make it!) - PDF, 1 page

"There is a truth that says that time flies when you are having fun. This couldn’t be more accurate for the 2012 CAHS National convention in Saint John, New Brunswick earlier this month. It just ended way too soon! Every aspect and event of the convention was fantastic... It was indeed great to see old friends and make many more personal contacts with all those members that were there. The conference was over way too quickly and I know planning has already started for our 50th convention and AGM next year in Ottawa. I’ll be there; I hope you will be as well.”

Even the media were in on the hype, especially in regards to the cenotaph dedication at the Wade-Myles Aviation Park (6 September). Click to read a couple of news stories covering the event:

1 September 1937 - Trans Canada Airlines Inaugural Flight

This year Canada’s largest airline celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Seventy-five years ago, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), Air Canada's predecessor, inaugurated its first flight carrying two passengers and mail between Vancouver and Seattle aboard a Lockheed L-10A Electra.

Since then, Air Canada has grown to be "the world's 15th largest airline and Canada's flag carrier serving over 150 destinations across Canada and worldwide on five continents," according to Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

In honour of their anniversary, Air Canada has launched an interactive website online, complete with videos and a sleek timeline detailing its 75-years of operation.

Check of these amazing infographics detailing Air Canada's 75 year lifespan in numbers, from the NHL Teams that rely on Air Canada's charter service, to shipping live lobster from the east coast for Chinese New Year, to how world events have shaped routes.

Be sure to visit the Canada Aviation and Space Museum's new photographic exhibit, "People, Places and Planes: Air Canada at 75." Bonus fact: The museum is home to an Air Canada Douglas DC-9 which flew in on 26 September 2002. Read more here.

"Harold served in the RCAF with the 487 Squadron in Britain during WWII, flying many missions in Ventura and Mosquito bombers. He retired from service with the rank of Squadron Leader in Vancouver in 1964. He became Civil Defence Coordinator in Richmond-Delta during the '60s and '70s. Curly loved to ride into the hills of the Southern Chilcotins "up country" on ol' Charley and gather in the evenings with his many pals."

Jimmy Essery, a long-time mechanic with Buffalo Airways, was found dead in Prosperous Lake near Yellowknife on 1 September, the victim of an apparent boating accident. Colin Webster writes, "It is a tremendous shock to the whole Buffalo crew, coming so soon after the passing of Arnie Schreder in June. He was 58 years old and had worked in the aviation industry in Yellowknife for 40 years. I had known him since 1980."

    Dear {tag:firstname},

One intriguing piece of news to come out this month is the auction sale of a rare 1942 Hawker Hurricane. The aircraft comes from The Imperial War Museum Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England, and flew along Canada's east coast during the Second World War. It and has been fully restored (read: airworthy), save the original Canadian paint scheme which has been replaced with Battle of Britain colours.

It is expected that bids could reach $2.6 million.

According to the above news article, the sale has piqued the interest of David Rohrer, CEO of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum near Hamilton, Ontario. You may recall that, as the story notes, the museum's own Hurricane was lost in a fire in 1993.

The sale of the Hurricane comes as dozens of buried Spitfires are scheduled to be excavated from a site in Burma and brought back to England. Each plane is said to be crated and buried (click to see a photo of the crate) and likely preserved in immaculate condition.

Twenty have been located so far and sources believe there are at least sixty. If one researcher is correct about the potential numbers, this could mean the recovery of "three to four times the number of airworthy models known to exist."

    Talk about hitting the jackpot!

Although the Spitfire discovery is an incredible one, I think the possibility of bringing the Hurricane back to Canada sounds pretty neat. I guess we will have to wait until December to find out where it will call home next!

This Month in Canadian Aviation History..

15 October 1936 - "The Flying Seven," Canada's first all female flying club, is established

The Flying Seven were a pioneer group of elite aviatrixes who together formed the first all female flying club. The aviation-minded women met in Vancouver and, when they were unable to join the American 99s, they established their own group that promoted women’s place in aviation through air shows and competitions.

The group’s founder, Margaret Fane (later Fane-Rutledge), was an extraordinary entrepreneur, radio operator, and bush pilot. At 21 years old she was the first female from Western Canada to hold a commercial pilot's license

To wear the grey uniform of The Flying Seven you had to have a flying licence. Elianne Roberge stated in the interview found here that “we wouldn’t take learners. All the girls were experienced. I started flying in 1929 and stopped in 1963. My licence is No. 678, and I still have it. You won’t find many people in Canada with a lower number.”

During the Second World War, the group was well publicized in newspapers and became an inspiration for air-minded women across the country. Not only did they provide radio and mechanical support at air training schools, they also sponsored the first air training centre for women (1941), and lead a “pamphlet raid” over the city to encourage donations to purchase training aircraft for #8 Flying Training School in Vancouver.

The group did not disband after the war, though their lives went in different directions. Margaret Fane-Rutledge died in 2004, and a foundation providing scholarships for business students was established in her memory.

This Month in Canadian Aviation History

11 November 1940: Air Cadet League of Canada Formed

The Air Cadet League of Canada is a country-wide, voluntary civilian youth organization. It was first established during the Second World War in partnership with the Royal Canadian Air Force to train future aircrews and promote an interest in aviation as a career.
79 squadrons existed across the nation by the end of 1941. By 1944, the program reached 374 squadrons and over 29,000 cadets - its peak wartime strength.
Today, the Air Cadet League partners with the Department of National Defence to support the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and its membership of ~23,000 cadets and 456 squadrons. According to the League’s website, close to one million young Canadians, men and women, have participated in the training program since 1941.

Bondurant, flying a Fairchild 71, dropped explosive charges onto the ice which produced a lot of ice chips and dead fish but no expedited break-up of the ice. Gary Solar and Bill MacDonald on "The Spy Intrepid" – Sir William Stephenson. This goes along with their event theme for November, "Pilots, POW's, and Peril." Next month, catch one of their free "One-of-a-Kind" themed tours, revolving around their collection's more unique aircraft.

    Lost and Found:
    Remembrance and Recollection:

    Skyward

CAHS National Member No. 948, Charles F. Vaughn of St. Catharines, passed away in October at the age of 86. He was a pilot and one of his famous aerial adventures was when he flew a twin engine airplane in the London (UK) to Victoria (BC) Air Race in 1971. He later spoke to the Toronto Chapter on the details of the two Atlantic crossings as a race participant.

From his obituary: "Predeceased by his first wife of many years. Charlie was a well-known pilot in the Niagara Peninsula and stories of his numerous adventures will be sorely missed. [...] If desired, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society or the St. George's Anglican Church Breakfast Club would be appreciated by the family."

We also recently received the news that Alan J. Grant, CAHS National Member No. 5228 and RCAF veteran, passed away in June.

    Dear Member,

Happy holidays and cheers to the coming new year! On behalf of the CAHS, I would like to thank all of our members who, over the holidays, gave the gift of a CAHS membership, and extend a very warm welcome our new members who received a membership as a gift!

Below you will find the last National e-newsletter of 2012. The CAHS has big plans for 2013 including - among many things - a revamped and interactive website, our Journal caught up to cover date, and our 50th anniversary celebration! In the coming year we are also exploring ways to expand the accessibility, reach, and exposure of the CAHS. If you have suggestions or ideas on how to build on these components, the Executive would love to hear from you!

I hope you have enjoyed a safe and joyous holiday season. From all of us at the CAHS, have a very happy New Year and all the best for 2013!

    Blue skies,
    Caitlin McWilliams

This Month in Canadian Aviation History

1 December 1945: A.V. Roe Canada Ltd is Formed

A.V. Roe Canada Ltd was established in 1945 when the U.K. based Hawker Siddeley Group acquired Victory Aircraft Ltd and their facilities in Malton, Ontario. The Avro plant opened with about 400 staff, most of whom had been kept on from wartime production.
In 1949, Avro Canada flew the Avro Jetliner - their first aircraft under the new company. Over the next decade, the company was responsible for manufacturing some of the most famous flying machines in Canadian aviation history including the CF-100 Canuck, CF-105 Arrow, & even the VZ-R Avrocar.
Within thirteen years of its inception, Avro Canada transformed into an industrial giant. At its peak it was the third-largest company in Canada and had over 50,000 employees.
Avro Canada was dissolved in 1962, and the Malton plant used for various initiatives until its demolition in 2004.

    Journal Update

They're here! December has been a great month for the CAHS Journal and by now you should have received both Volume 50-1 (Spring 2012) and 50-2 (Summer 2012). My issues actually arrived in my e-mail inbox just one week apart!

As you may know we have been working hard to catch up the production dates to "cover dates" while, at the same time, incorporating revised editorial processes and standards. Such a miraculous turnover could not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our Journal Editor, Terry Higgins, and our committed Journal Editorial Board.

    An update from Terry
    on forthcoming issues:

Journal 50-3 (Fall 2012) is in the final post-proofreading stage of preparation. However the holiday interregnum, both here and at the printers and mailing house, presented a minor and unavoidable interruption. I will have it within the printer's workflow by Friday, 4 January or Monday, 7 January at latest. Timing from printer intake to mailing house delivery to Canada Post should be very similar to that experienced for 50-2 (a week or two at most).

Journal 50-4 (Winter 2012) is well advanced and should be within the printers workflow before the end of January, with similar production/delivery timeline expectations. The selected final content for Journal 51-1 (Spring 2013) is in editorial and layout development, and is therefore anticipated to be on time (early/mid April 2013 delivery).

Remember the CAHS rule: You will always get four Journals for every year you have paid your dues, no matter when they might arrive! If you have any comments or questions, contact Terry at editor@cahs.ca.

    2013 CAHS National Convention

Plans are underway for our 50th Anniversary Convention in Ottawa this coming September. Details will be forthcoming as they become confirmed. In the meantime, the 50th Anniversary Committee needs your help if:
    • You are a CAHS Chapter and will be organizing an event marking the 50th Anniversary, let the Anniversary Committee know so that widespread advertising can take place through the newsletter, website, Facebook, and Twitter
    • You are a long time CAHS Member and have stories and/or pictures from the early years, the Anniversary Committee would love to hear from you
    • You have any ideas of how to commemorate the 50th (events, writings to publish, items to create and sell, etc), please contact the Anniversary Committee
    • You can volunteer to be a committee member and help share the workload
Contact Rachel Lea Heide at treasurer@cahs.ca for more information.

Visit cahs.ca to view our rotating blog feature. This month, Bruce McLeod and Mark Whittaker offer insight into the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre and its recently finished replica of a 1926 Fairchild Model FC-2 "Razorback."

They write: "The Fairchild FC-2 [...] emerged on 27 October 2012 from the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre's workshops (at the Old Cow Barn on the Macdonald Campus of McGill University) after over 12 years of work. Built from scratch with original plans, and supplemented by the creativity, ingenuity, craftsmanship and enthusiasm of volunteers in the restoration team [...] this full scale 1926 'multi-tasker of the skies' aircraft is the first of several aviation projects currently underway at the CAHC."

Mathias Joost was recently able to present Carl Vincent with his McIntyre Research Award. The Mac McIntyre Award is the annual CAHS Journal article award for outstanding research. The recipient is determined by a vote submitted by the readers of the Journal, and Carl's article "The North American Saga of Spitfire L1090" was chosen as the winner at the past CAHS Annual Meeting / Convention. Congratulations, Carl!

The Manitoba Chapterof the CAHS and Lyncrest airport invite you to the Soaring High Aviation Film Fest, a new activity starting in January. Each month, Bill Zuk will guest host an evening featuring two aviation-related feature films and documentaries. On 10 January, grab some popcorn and catch Fly Away Home (1996) followed by Flight (1996). The subsequent dates are 7 February, 7 March, and 11 April.

I would personally like to thank the CAHS Toronto Chapter for inviting me to speak at their November meeting. The Chapter was a great host and I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with members about Canadian nose art during the Second World War. Not only was it a fun time, but I also received an aviation-themed gift from the Chapter afterwards!

     Museum and Restoration Initiatives

    Bomber Command Museum of Canada

On 27 December, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada was featured on CBC National News who reported on BCATP instructor Gordon Jones and his new biography written by Annie Gafiuk. The Museum recently held an event to launch this book, and Mr. Jones has been flying flypasts for the Museum for over twenty years. You can order the publication through their website here.

View the Museum's most recent newsletter here.

    Canadian Air and Space Museum

The Canadian Air and Space Museum continues to run a campaign to raise $500,000 with the hope it will be put towards building a new museum at Toronto Pearson Airport. So far they have reached just over $20,000, so they still have a long way to go! Help by donating online here or sending a cheque, and remember that all donations over $5 receive a 'thank-you' in return (admission tickets, books, DVDs, etc). For updates on the campaign, join the Museum's mailing list here.

    Canada Aviation and Space Museum

In honour of astronaut Chris Hadfield's launch to the International Space Station, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum is hosting an "Off in Space" program during the holidays. Families can learn about space, etc through printmaking, games, and workshops until 6 January.

    Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre

The Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre is trying to raise interest in the restoration of their 1941 Westland Lysander (which would make it the only flying example in the Pacific Northwest). The Museum has just about everything needed to restore it to flying condition, so spread the word by checking out their website or 'Like'-ing the project on Facebook.

    Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum has began planning for its 2013 airshow (15-16 June), and recent additions to the line-up include a newly restored de Havilland Mosquito from the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. You can already purchase tickets for the airshow here!

    Vintage Wings of Canada

New on the Vintage Wings Newsreel:

    Western Canada Aviation Museum

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays in January, the Western Canada Aviation Museum will be hosting guided tours of their collection of cold weather transport airplanes. As always, the tour is free with a paid admission.

     Bits and Bytes

    Chris Hadfield Blasts Off!

On 19 December, 53-year old Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfieldsuccessfully blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a six-month visit in space that will see him become the first Canadian to command the ISS.
While in space, Chris has been posting statuses and photos to his Twitter account! Follow him at @Cmdr_Hadfield as he posts about the mission and answers questions from followers.
Chris is travelling with his guitar, and one highlight of his journey (though there have been many!) has been his recording of a Christmas carol, "Jewel in the Night," all the way from space. The song was written by his brother, Dave Hadfield, and you can listen to it in YouTube here, and read the lyrics here.
Vintage Wings has a few fantastic posts on their blog written by his brother, Dave Hadfield, as he reflects on the days leading up to the launch. Through heart-warming text and intimate photographs, his posts offer a first-hand look at what it is like to be part of the family of an astronaut.
